Lame Breaking News – Discovery Channel Offices Have Hostage Situation [Live Link]

The Washington Post is reporting that the offices of the Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel and others (their parent company is known as Discovery Communications Inc.) have a hostage situation in Silver Springs, Maryland. The man is said to have an explosive device on him;

A man with what appears to be an explosive device on him has taken at least one hostage at the Discovery Building in downtown Silver Spring, Montgomery County Police said.Cpl. Dan Friz said police received a call about 1 p.m., of shots fired in the lobby.Tactical officers are on the scene and developing a plan to deal with the situation.Police initially said the building was being evacuated, but employees said they were told via email to stay at their desks.

Officers have not fired their weapons, Friz said.

If you live on Earth you likely live by a place where people just beg, their vocation is soliciting donations for their cause – ass, grass or gas – you work to support them. But don’t feel sorry for all of them. For some can make a buck, euro or yuan really last a long time – so long they don’t even take place in the Supermarket Sweep you’d go through because you eat a lot more than these ninjas. They were given free $50 credit cards and mostly didn’t even use them. For god’s sake, I’d be getting StarCraft II. Here is a sample of the results…

Though I have to add that this was in Canada (the story mentions another study as well.. interesting read). In Downtown Toronto a homeless, handicapped, man once asked me for the mass-produced cigars I was smoking. I stopped, went back and tried to pay into the Canadian karma system by giving him one when he gave me a $2.00 CAD – which at the time, after 9/11, was starting to be worth more than the American Dollar and way more than what I paid for them in the states. This shocked all of us when he said it was his pleasure. WTF?

Though there is a guy I look for when life gets crazy – he is homeless and always smiling, and if you only just say ‘hello’ to him he will skip you every time you walk past him for the rest of his life. I swear. I think it was Christmas day or something that I saw him and offered to buy something and he turned me down… WTF?

I think they like it, seems kinda easy.

Sarah Palin – you never cease to amaze me. After Dr. Laura Schlessinger decided it would be best to quit radio after dropping the N-bomb on the radio last week Palin has come out on Twitter supporting Dr. Laura for being an idiot.

Okay – mind you when Obama came out in support of the “Ground Zero Mosque” Palin asked Obama (also via Twitter) that even though they could build it there should they? Obama was making the point that the Muslim community had every right to build a mosque at the top of the new Freedom Tower if they wanted to – that it was America, and they had that right. Palin didn’t disagree, through Twitter, but she certainly said it wasn’t a wise move, that it was in poor taste and offensive.

Somehow though, the irony has been lost on her….

Fail: Can’t post YouTube video of my Ubuntu Desktop

I’ve created a few screen grabs of my Ubuntu 10.04 (kick ass) desktop and I can’t get any of them to convert without getting washed out with trippy colors. The source file coming from recordmydesktop is .ogv and converting it via YouTube or via Pitivi results in the same horrible product. I am guessing Google uses ffmpeg

I love the entire set of warnings in the instruction set, especially since it starts with: Do NOT save deleted messages on the server. It gets fun in part three, my emphasis.

Do NOT save deleted messages to your [Gmail]/All Mail folder as some clients will try to empty this folder and ultimately fail. This can lead to delayed mail access or excessive battery consumption on a mobile device.

I’ve been personally attracted to a few smaller women in my time, but my blood boils at the sight of a curvy woman with the right moves. So this study spells out what we already know. Duh.

Hack: Cleaning Up Your Gmail Account In A Few Simple Steps

It seems that over time I’ve collected over 20,000 Gmail “conversations” and until today had 1,800 unread e-mails in my inbox. Who knows how many “read” e-mails I might have had. When I first opened the account in 2004 I was very diligent when it came to cleaning the inbox up, archiving, staring, and so forth. I rarely deleted e-mails as there seems to be no reason to with Gmail (The footer reads: You are currently using 976 MB (13%) of your 7367 MB). Alas what started as a dedicated mail trap has moved on to become the catch-all mailbox. And why not? It is so easy to search and manage that there is no reason to continually archive and delete. Something had to be done though when I linked Gmail to my iPhone.

I was rarely checking e-mail, up until a year ago, as it wasn’t a source of communication for me. I was e-mailing assignments to teachers (before I graduated from the diploma mill) and getting newsletters and so forth when I started this account. Now everyone is using e-mail and I get quite a few important updates such as Facebook notifications, etc. But that was just coming in too fast, and I wasn’t good about “deleting” stuff. If you click a link an in e-mail on the iPhone you are taken right to Safari and will likely not go back an archive the message when you get the next chance to do so.

The problem I had was that I like to use the “unread” status, rather keeping things unread, to know that I need to follow up on an item (notorious one at this point is the reminder to file my tax returns!). This works for Outlook at work as you can create a search folder that displays just those unread e-mails – I don’t see a way to do that with Gmail on the iPhone (though I have an idea for how to do so with labels!).

So I needed to clean everything up. Turns out it was an easy process. I started by searching for things that seem to flood my “inbox” but that would have taken hours to find each Crate and Barrel, The Onion, Border Rewards and Facebook e-mail that was ever sent to me.

Instead I did the following:

Searched using the following: label:inbox label:read

Selected all (using the Select: All, None, Read, Unread, Starred, Unstarred shortcuts). Then continuted to select more using the “Select all conversations that match this search” option.

Hit the archive button, confirming I wanted to archive each and every one of those suckers.

Profit!
(Though you’ll notice there is an extra step in there – it can be done differently, but it wasn’t allowing me to archive every one using Select: Unread.)

Then to clean up my unread e-mails:

Starred those 10 e-mails that are sitting there as reminders.

Searched: label:inbox -is:starred
(Notice the minus sign in front of the “is:starred”, this will perform an inverse selection)
“Select all conversations that match this search”

Hit the archive button, confirming I wanted to archive each and every one of those suckers.

Profit!

Now I have 10 e-mails sitting in my inbox that I can easily scan over and the unread reminders are no longer spread out with 25 read pieces of junk in between. Very much for the win. Now I just have to keep up on it. But using the above steps I can just go back maybe once a month and perform some clean up when needed, in just a few minutes (if even a whole minute).
