Lame Breaking News – Discovery Channel Offices Have Hostage Situation [Live Link]

The Washington Post is reporting that the offices of the Discovery Channel, The Learning Channel and others (their parent company is known as Discovery Communications Inc.) have a hostage situation in Silver Springs, Maryland. The man is said to have an explosive device on him;

A man with what appears to be an explosive device on him has taken at least one hostage at the Discovery Building in downtown Silver Spring, Montgomery County Police said.Cpl. Dan Friz said police received a call about 1 p.m., of shots fired in the lobby.Tactical officers are on the scene and developing a plan to deal with the situation.Police initially said the building was being evacuated, but employees said they were told via email to stay at their desks.

Officers have not fired their weapons, Friz said.

Forget CNN and the rest. This is going to be your best way to find out what is going on first hand during this Hatian earthquake crisis. The next best bet is this Google Live search for “earthquake” – it will give you tweets and news stories as they come in.

Update: Here is an excellent resource, PicFog – think images sourced from the cloud (I guess). I’m sure this page will generate a good view of the current events.

Madoff, serving 150 years at the Butner, NC, federal prison, was heard last week getting into a heated debate over the state of the market with another senior-citizen jailbird.

The shouting match got so heated that the inmate pushed Madoff, who shoved back harder with both hands, causing his attacker to stumble.

As the attacker tried to stand up straight, Madoff hovered over him red-faced and glaring, eyewitnesses said.

Today I received an e-mail from Air America Radio with the teaser:

Pitney-gate: Why Is Huffington Post Getting Called On At White House Pressers?

First I have to say it’s a teaser because I saw no mention of this story in the actual e-mail. Secondly, maybe it has something to do with the huge sum of money recently invested in the Huffington Post ($15 million!), money which didn’t come from the White House and the taxpayer.

Why not reward an American company that is out there doing it without asking for a bailout and a media company that isn’t about to go under? (see: American Newspapers) Now this isn’t the reason that Obama called on Pitney, it was because they knew he had a real question. But the above is just my 2 cents.

Of course we know China doesn’t really want to block porn, they want to block Tiananmen Square related history pages:

Chinas government wants all PCs sold in the country from July 1 to be loaded with software that blocks certain websites, the Wall Street Journal reported on Monday.

The paper cited the software’s main developer as saying the primary target was pornography, and added that the government said it was to protect young people from “harmful” content.

The “Lawsuit Zeus,” also known as “Johnny Sue-nami,” filed a lawsuit this week in federal court seeking an injunction to stop the Guinness Book of World Records from naming him as the person who has filed the most lawsuits in the history of mankind.

Riches alleges that Guinness is planning to print false information about the number of lawsuits he has filed, which he says is more than 4,000 worldwide. And he objects to the names Guinness intends to call him, including: “The litigator crusader,” the “duke of lawsuits,” “Johnny Sue-nami,” “Sue-per-man” and the “Patrick Ewing of suing.”

I think he’s suing over the term “Patrick Ewing of suing” – who wants to be compared to Patrick Ewing?

Lame: Red Bull Gives You Wings, But Not Enough Cocaine To Do Anything

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment says there isn’t enough cocaine in Red Bull to actually do anything, so why is it in there?

Six German states have told retailers to stop selling Red Bull Cola energy drinks after a test found a trace amount of cocaine.

The bans started Friday after a sample test conducted by authorities in North Rhine-Westphalia state found 0.4 micrograms per liter in the drink.

Five other states also banned it from shops amid concerns over possible narcotics law violations.

Lame: Losing a War Because You Can’t Get Your Sh*t Together

According to the GAO GPS may go dark next year;

It’s unclear whether the U.S. Air Force will be able to acquire new satellites in time to prevent disruption in GPS service for military and civilian users, according to the report.

The GAO said that the Air Force has struggled in recent years to stay within cost and scheduling constraints while building GPS satellites. So far, one satellite program has incurred cost overruns of $870 million and the launch of its first satellite has been pushed back three years to November 2009

Of course some idiot has the idea to make the service private – because that always solves the world’s problems. Maybe he would want the service managed by a Chinese firm? It’s managed by the Air Force for a reason (even without Selective Availability in play):

“Hand it over to a private firm, using ongoing accountability in both system performance and cost efficiencies as benchmarks.”

Once you hand it over to a private firm you’ll start seeing fee’s to access the GPS satellites. And they would be able to charge whatever they like since they would be the only ones with access to the GPS satellite network. Privatizing is not always a good idea. We’re already paying for the satellites through taxes, we don’t need another fee just to access them.
